Belle Fourche
The downtown area retains much of the aura of the early 1900s, yet many of the buildings now contain locally owned coffee shops as well as stores touting antiques, Western wear and quilts. Bronze sculptures commemorate the rich history of the annual Black Hills Roundup held over the 4th of July.
The actual geographical center of the entire country, including Alaska and Hawaii, is 20 miles north of Belle Fourche. In celebration, a 21-foot-diameter monument in the shape of a compass rose has been carved out of South Dakota granite. The Center of the Nation Monument can be seen behind the Tri-State Museum at 415 5th Ave.
