So great were the implications of this landmark case that the greatest legal minds of the day—William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow—served as prosecution and defense attorneys, respectively. Darrow and Scopes lost, but the philosophy of education was never quite the same thereafter. Bryan died in town the Sunday following the verdict. In 1930 the small, Christian, liberal arts college of Bryan was founded in his honor.
The 7-day Tennessee Strawberry Festival in early May includes concerts, gospel singing, arts and crafts displays, sports events, parades, fireworks and strawberry foodstuffs.
