NATIONAL PARK

Richmond National Battlefield Park

Of McClellan's campaign, the park includes the sites of the important Seven Days' Battles at Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines' Mill Glendale and Malvern Hill. Grant's campaign is represented by the battlefields at Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor, where on June 3, 1864, Grant hurled his army at strongly fortified Confederate positions, resulting in nearly 5,000 casualties. That September, Grant also made several more attacks across the James River on Confederates at Fort Harrison and New Market Heights.

Several Confederate strongholds, including Fort Harrison and Drewry's Bluff (Fort Darling), and Union-built Fort Brady are in the park. Living-history programs are presented in summer. The park's units are open daily dawn-dusk. Visitor center hours vary by location. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Free. Phone (804) 226-1981.
