A once endangered population of white-tailed deer, thought to be extinct in the 1930s, lives within Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer. The refuge covers 4,757 acres on the mainland and several islands in the Columbia River below Cathlamet. Wildlife often can be seen from Steamboat Slough and Brooks Slough roads, especially in the morning and evening when the deer feed in the pastures.
