Thoroughbred horse racing has drawn crowds since 1786. Charles Town Races, 1 mile east on US 340, is open all year; phone (304) 725-7001 or (800) 795-7001.

Charles Town marks the West Virginia terminus of the scenic portion of SR 9, which runs eastward into Virginia. From Charles Town it is 6 miles to the Virginia border.
