DESTINATION

Waukesha

Another small reminder of the past is a marker in Cutler Park honoring a local citizen who safely transported the first slave through Wisconsin into Canada. Waukesha was an important station on the Underground Railroad and an abolitionist stronghold; the American Freeman was published in the town 1844-48.

Waukesha is an industrial and college town serving the surrounding dairying and farming area. Colleges include Carroll University, University of Wisconsin-Waukesha and Waukesha County Technical College. Frame Park, the largest of 45 municipal parks, is noted for its formal garden and river walk; phone (262) 524-3737.
