Franconia Notch
The grandeur of the notch most likely was first seen by white settlers in the late 18th century. Its fame spread quickly, and by the mid-1800s it was a favorite tourist destination, with huge hotels to accommodate a plethora of visitors. Although the hotels no longer exist, throngs of visitors continue to enjoy the area's scenic and recreational aspects, many of which are within Franconia Notch State Park.
Echo Lake is bounded by mountains on three sides. Named for the acoustical phenomenon resulting from its setting, the lake is the largest body of water in the notch and offers boating, fishing and swimming. The beach is open daily 9-6, mid-June through Labor Day; Fri.-Sun. and Memorial Day 9-6, late May to mid-June; Fri.-Sun 9-5, day after Labor Day-Columbus Day.
