Kinsman, like the other White Mountain notches, was deepened and widened by the Pleistocene ice sheet. As the glaciers melted and frost weakened the fractures in the north face of the notch, huge blocks of granite plunged into Lost River Gorge to form the narrow passages among which the river gets lost.
