Pinkham Notch Scenic Area

In 1790 Joseph Pinkham, whose name was bestowed on the notch, allegedly brought his possessions to his new home via pig-drawn sled. The rough trace that Pinkham and his companions followed has since evolved into scenic SR 16, which threads through the pass between Jackson and Gorham. On the south slope the road parallels the Ellis River and offers access to such spots as Glen Ellis Falls and Crystal Cascade along the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.

The ravine's sheer west wall challenges expert downhill skiers. The notch and its attractions are within the White Mountain National Forest.

A visitor center on SR 16 between North Conway and Gorham is sponsored by the Appalachian Mountain Club.
