Lewis And Clark National Forest
The Rocky Mountain Unit rises sharply from grasslands to peaks between 7,000 and 8,000 feet in elevation. Access to the area is by a number of gravel roads off US 89 that connect with forest roads and trailheads and serve several campgrounds.
Southeast of Great Falls is the Jefferson Unit, scattered inland mountain ranges dotting the prairie, including the Little Belt, Castle, Highwoods, Big Snowy and Little Snowy mountain ranges and the north end of the Crazy Mountains. The Jefferson Division has short, dome-like mountains rather than jagged peaks.
The mountains are forest-covered and have moderate slopes that present less demanding hiking and riding trails than those found in the Rocky Mountain Unit. There are many streams but no large rivers or lakes.
