POINT OF INTEREST

Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Palace)

Calle La Atarazana 2, Santo Domingo

Overlooking the Plaza de España and the Ozama River, the Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Palace) was built in the early 1500s as the governor’s residence for Diego Columbus, Christopher’s son. Today, it’s one of the Colonial Zone’s most popular museums, and houses period furniture, artworks, and artifacts from the 16th century.

Built out of coral rocks in a mix of Spanish, Gothic, Italian Renaissance, and Mudejar styles, the building was abandoned in the 1800s and then rebuilt in the 20th century. Explore 22 rooms over two stories inside the restored palace and museum, and see a collection of furniture, household items, artworks, tapestries, musical instruments, and weaponry, which offer a glimpse of life in Colonial Santo Domingo. Visit independently or as part of a guided tour of Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone.

  • The museum is a must-see for history buffs.

  • There’s a small entrance fee to access the museum.

  • A free audio guide is available in different languages.

  • Most of the items inside the museum are not originals from the palace, which had been ransacked at one point.

  • The museum is not wheelchair accessible.

The Alcázar de Colón is located at Calle Las Damas at Plaza España (also known as the Plaza de Armas). It’s within walking distance of many other attractions inside the Colonial Zone and often included as a stop on Santo Domingo sightseeing tours, including tours from Punta Cana and elsewhere.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon.. Plan to spend 1-2 hours exploring the many different rooms. A popular museum, it’s best to visit during the week and early in the day to avoid the crowds. The building is also beautiful at night when lit up.

Located near the Alcázar de Colón, the Museum of the Royal Houses offers another good example of Spanish Colonial architecture, and was also built in the early 16th century. Comprising two connected buildings, it once held the New World’s first court of law and political offices, and today, contains a collection of Taino and Colonial artifacts.
