Baixa District (Lower Town)

Baixa, Lisbon, PRT

Lisbon’s most lively neighborhood, Baixa District (Lower Town) lies in the sweet, central spot between Alfama and Bairro Alto. The buzzing district is packed with stores, restaurants, hotels, and bars, and is home to the city’s most symbolic streets and squares. Built after the 1755 earthquake, Baixa showcases “Modern Lisbon’s” neoclassical architecture.

A trip to Lisbon is not complete without a visit to the downtown Baixa neighborhood. Many of the city’s top attractions—such as St. George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge), Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio), the Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa), and Avenida da Liberdade—are located in this teeming area.

City tours typically include visits to this historic area and discuss the significance of it and its key sights. For a deeper dive into Lisbon’s history and culture, book a private tour of the city and visit Baixa, Belem, and other districts.

  • Baixa District (Lower Town) is a must for all visitors to Lisbon due to its central location and many don’t-miss attractions.

  • The streets are cobblestoned and uneven, so wear comfortable shoes.

  • Visit the Lisboa Story Centre, located in Commerce Square, for tourist information.

Baixa District (Lower Town) is the heart of downtown Lisbon. Take any number of trams or buses into Commerce Square and simply wander around the streets of Baixa. Alternatively, take the metro to Rossio or Baixa-Chiado station and stroll down to the district.

Baixa and Lisbon are crowded and hot during the summer months of June, July, and August. Plan to arrive in the shoulder seasons, when there are fewer people and pleasant weather.

After being completely destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755, Baixa District (Lower Town) underwent a complete overhaul by Marquis of Pombal. The area was dubbed “Modern Lisbon” because of its neoclassical buildings, pedestrian streets and squares, art deco stores, and vintage electric trams. Though it is not considered modern anymore, the district has been well preserved, and newer construction stays in keeping with existing architecture for a uniform, beautiful look.
