POINT OF INTEREST

Bass Museum of Art

2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, Florida

Established in 1964 from couple John and Johanna Bass’ private art collection, The Bass Museum of Art has since become one of Miami Beach’s premier art institutions. Now housed in an expansive, sleek building following its 2017 renovation, the museum is dedicated to international contemporary art, and also offers educational programming.

Considered Miami Beach’s banner contemporary art museum, the Bass Museum of Art has welcomed diverse audiences for decades. Housed in an art deco 1930s library that was later modernized by architect Arata Isozaki, the museum showcases the work of international contemporary artists across many media, extending to fashion, architecture, and design. The adjoining Creativity Center is a destination for shopping, dining, and education, while Collins Park, the site of Ugo Rondinone’s colorful Miami Mountain sculpture, is a palm-lined, public green space that leads to the museum entry.

The Bass is easy to explore as part of a cultural day out in Miami Beach, thanks in part to its flexible visiting policy: Tickets can be booked online in advance, but walk-ins are welcome. The museum is also a sightseeing stop on a number of Miami Beach tours.

  • Miami Beach residents receive free entry to the Bass Museum of Art, and admission is discounted for kids, students, and seniors.

  • There’s a café inside for refreshments and light bites.

  • The museum’s shop sells books, jewelry, and other gift items.

The Bass Museum of Art is located at 2100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. If using public transportation, you can take bus 120, 150, M, S, or Middle Beach Loop. If driving from downtown Miami, take South Venetian Way or the MacArthur Causeway; metered street spaces and several paid lots are nearby.

The Bass Museum of Art is open Wednesday to Saturday, from noon until early evening. In addition to its permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum hosts tours, classes, and other events, so check the schedule in advance. Note that it’s likely to be more crowded on weekends, and during Art Basel.

Miami Beach is celebrated for its wealth of colorful art deco architecture. After admiring The Bass’ own art deco exterior, make sure to admire the other nearby highlights: The Art Deco Historic District is located between 5th Street and 23rd Street, and architecture-themed walking tours are hosted daily.
