The lush landscapes of Bear Mountain State Park rise up from the banks of the Hudson River, providing a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts from New York City and beyond. Here you'll find more than 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares to explore. Hike peaks ascending to 1,300 feet (396 meters, and enjoy activities like boating, skiing, fishing, and more.

There's a lot to do at Bear Mountain State Park. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular in the winter, and the park's outdoor ice rink is great for families. You can learn about local ecology at the donation-only Trailside Museums & Zoo, and even hike along the Appalachian Trail.

If you want to extend your visit, you can stay overnight at the turn-of-the-century Bear Mountain Inn. The inn sits at the top of Bear Mountain and offers great views, boat rentals, and your choice of accommodation—you can stay in the lodge or book a cabin. Rates vary seasonally.

  • Opt for a helicopter tour for the best views of fall foliage.
  • Parking for guests with disabilities is located at the Trailside north gate, though trails may not be wheelchair accessible.
  • Kids shouldn't miss the merry-go-round.

It's best to drive to Bear Mountain State Park, which is located just about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from New York City: there’s a moderate, per-vehicle parking fee. Take the Palisades Interstate Parkway North, and exit toward US Route 202 West. You can find the park offices on Seven Lakes Drive. Alternatively, seasonal Circle Line cruises glide up the Hudson River and dock at the park—perfect for travelers without a car.

Visit Bear Mountain State Park when the weather suits your preferred activities. January and February typically bring chilly weather and snow, ideal conditions for cross-country skiing and ice skating. Hikers may prefer an early fall visit to enjoy the changing leaves. To take a swim in the park's pool, the balmy summer months of July and August are best.

Don't miss the chance to hike here. The easy Bear Mountain Dock route departs from the zoo, and offers views of Iona Island. For a challenge, the Fort Montgomery loop starts behind Bear Mountain Inn, and covers a piece of the Appalachian Trail. For a true workout, try Bald Mountain. At just about 7 miles (11 kilometers), this trail takes you up to a summit.
