POINT OF INTEREST

Benfica Museum (Museu Benfica - Cosme Damiao)

Avenida Eusébio da Silva Ferreira Porta 9, Benfica, Lisbon, PRT

Spread over three floors, Lisbon’s Benfica Museum - Cosme Damião tells the story of soccer in Portugal. Highlights include a showcase of hundreds of trophies along with a selection of interactive audiovisual displays. A short documentary is screened inside a geodesic dome theater.

Founded in 2013, this museum features 29 different thematic areas equipped with interactive multimedia displays that detail the history of soccer in Portugal. Temporary exhibits are also staged here on a regular basis. While the museum can be visited independently, many travelers opt to come here as part of a private tour to the adjacent Benfica Stadium, commonly referred to as the Estádio da Luz. Some guided tours include hotel pick-up and drop-off.

  • The museum is a must-visit for sports fans.

  • Food and drink is not allowed, except in the top-floor cafeteria.

  • The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair and stroller users. Loaner wheelchairs are available.

The museum is located in a complex next to the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon’s Benfica neighborhood. The museum entrance is next to gate 10. The nearest metro stop is Alto dos Mohinos on the Blue Line; the closest bus stop is Estadio da Luz on bus line number 750.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm, except on Christmas, New Year's Day, and European match days. The museum is busiest on regular match days, but it only stays open until match kick-off. If you aren't coming to see a match at the same time, it's best to visit on a non-match day.

It's worth combining your visit to the museum with a tour of the adjacent Estadio da Luz, a massive stadium built to host the 2004 European Championship. Tours are held on non-game days and typically take visitors behind the scenes to see the dressing rooms and pitch.
