POINT OF INTEREST

Cascada Cola de Caballo (Horsetail Waterfall)

Cola de Caballo, Santiago, Nuevo Leon

The 82-foot (25-meter) Horsetail Waterfall (Cascada Cola de Caballo) is the star attraction in a park of the same name, situated just outside the pueblo mágico (magic town) of Santiago. Popular among local families, picnic alongside the tumbling falls for a back-to-nature escape from hectic Monterrey.

Most visitors combine a visit to the Horsetail Waterfall with an exploration of nearby Santiago’s historic center. To get a greater insight into both places, as well as the surrounding park and places you might have otherwise overlooked, opt for a local-led tour from Monterrey. Otherwise, highlights of the Cola de Caballo Park for adventurous travelers include a small zipline, tree top walks, and even bungee jumping facilities.

  • The Horsetail Waterfall is a great place to enjoy a leisurely picnic, ideal for couples and travelers with kids.

  • There are snack vendors and restrooms near the falls, as well as stalls selling cocktails.

  • You can rent bikes, horses, and off-road vehicles in the Cola de Caballo Park.

  • Due to rough terrain, it’s not possible to access the Horsetail Waterfall with either a stroller or wheelchair.

The Horsetail Waterfall is located just an hour’s drive outside of Monterrey and 20 minutes from the center of Santiago. Although the waterfall isn’t very remote, it’s also not that well-connected via public transit. Consequently, most visitors find it easiest to arrive by private vehicle or as part of an excursion that includes round-trip transportation.

The Horsetail Waterfall is open daily from the mid-morning to the early evening, although it’s best visited in the morning when you’ve got the greatest chance of having the place to yourself. The falls are popular among local families at the weekend too, so visit midweek if you want a more tranquil experience.

If you enjoyed the Horsetail Waterfall and want to visit more natural attractions in and around Monterrey, look no further than the García Caves. Alternatively, take a hike into the Chipinque Eco Park, try your hand at climbing the Cerro de la Silla—a notable feature of the Monterrey skyline—or go chasing (more) waterfalls in the Estanzuela Natural Park.
