Column of Constantine (Çemberlitaş Sütunu)

Vezirhan Caddesi 16, Fatih, Istanbul, TUR

The Column of Constantine (Çemberlitaş Sütunu), located in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, is a monumental landmark dating back to the 4th century. Built to celebrate the emperor's victory over his rival Maxentius, the column is one of the most significant surviving Roman landmarks in Istanbul and a popular pit stop for travelers visiting the Grand Bazaar.

Through relatively unremarkable to look at, the 115-foot (35-meter) Column of Constantine holds a long and fascinating history, spanning the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires up to today’s Republic of Turkey. It’s rightfully an essential itinerary point on most sightseeing tours of Istanbul’s Old City, and travelers may find that a guide’s commentary brings richness to an otherwise nondescript column. Many tours also include hotel pickup, drop-off, and lunch at a Turkish restaurant.

  • The column is located outdoors, and travelers should dress appropriately for the weather.

  • The area is usually quite crowded, so be aware of your belongings at all times.

  • The square surrounding the Column of Constantine is wheelchair-accessible.

The Column of Constantine is situated in the Old City of Istanbul, near the main entrance to the Grand Bazaar. It is easily accessible by foot from many nearby attractions, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. In addition, visitors can take the T1 tram line to Çemberlitaş stop, which is located just a few feet from the column.

The Column of Constantine is free and open to visitors year-round, with 24-hour public access. Visiting the column early in the day or late in the afternoon is recommended to avoid crowds or heat during the summer months (June to August). The area is generally considered safe during daylight hours but should be avoided late at night.

The 16th-century Çemberlitaş Hamamı is located immediately next to the Column of Constantine. This historic hammam is the perfect place to enjoy an authentic Turkish bath experience. The centuries-old tradition starts with a steam room, followed by a full-body scrub and gentle foam massage with special soaps and oils. It’s the best way to immerse yourself in local culture while unwinding simultaneously.
