Coyuca Lagoon (Laguna de Coyuca)

Acapulco, Guerrero

North of Acapulco, freshwater Coyuca Lagoon, or Laguna de Coyuca in Spanish, spreads across some 28 square miles (72 square kilometers) and is particularly important for migrating birds. Several small islands along the coast act as sanctuaries for colonies of pelicans, herons, storks, and other species. The lagoon is also a popular destination for water sports.

Located just 6 miles (10 kilometers) from bustling Acapulco, Coyuca Lagoon has a lush jungle shoreline that’s been featured in movies such asRambo,Tarzan, andThe African Queen. On a guided boat tour, explore the tropical vegetation, coconut palm groves, mangroves, and water hyacinths, as you keep an eye out for the seabirds that call the lagoon home. Water-sports activities such as waterskiing and Jet Skiing are available, and some tours include the chance to release baby turtles.

  • Coyuca Lagoon is an ideal day trip for bird-watchers and nature lovers.

  • Stop in the nearby tiny town of Embarcadero to pick up fresh seafood if you have cooking facilities.

  • The lagoon is located in Pie de la Cuesta, a small beach town with restaurants and resorts, as well as a popular spa.

Most visitors travel to Coyuca Lagoon on a half- or full-day tour from Acapulco, which includes round-trip transportation, but you can certainly visit on your own. Buses marked "Pie de la Cuesta" leave regularly from La Costera in central Acapulco, dropping you off at the broad, sandy peninsula that separates the Pacific from the estuary.

Guided Coyuca Lagoon boat tours typically leave in the morning from Acapulco, but sunset is a popular time to visit Pie de la Cuesta and the lagoon because of the picturesque views, so if you’re traveling on your own plan to linger later into the day. Wintertime (from December to March) is peak season in Acapulco, which means you’ll come across the biggest crowds then.

Known for its relaxed vibe, Pie de la Cuesta is considered a peaceful getaway from Acapulco and makes for an easy day-trip option, especially for couples looking for a romantic escape. In addition to the lagoon, this small beach town boasts seafood restaurants and eco-friendly resorts. It is also home to a Mexican Air Force base.
