Darajani Market (Marikiti Kuu)

Market Street, Zanzibar

Daranji Market (Marikiti Kuu) is Stone Town's primary market bazaar—it’s a one-stop-shopping experience for anyone looking to pick up fresh seafood, vegetables, and spices. A stroll through the market gives you an excellent introduction to the ingredients used in Zanzibari cooking and is an ideal spot to pick up souvenir spices.

Darajani Market is one of the liveliest spots in Stone Town. While fish, produce, and other ingredients are the main offering here, you'll also find a hodgepodge of other things to buy, from electronics to home goods. Although the market largely targets the local population, there are a few vendors selling souvenir-worthy handicrafts. Darajani Market is a popular stop on most Stone Town walking tours, while many cooking classes include a visit to the market to pick up ingredients.

  • There's a lot to photograph in the market, but always ask vendors first before taking photos of their displays.

  • While the market is mostly on paved, flat surfaces, wheelchair users and people pushing strollers might find parts too narrow to get through easily.

  • As fresh meat, poultry, and seafood are sold here, parts of the market have a strong aroma.

The bazaar sits right off Benjamin Mkapa Road and is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the heart of town. Most Stone Town hotels and attractions are within a 10-minute walk of the market—you're likely to stop here on a walking tour of the town.

The market opens early in the morning and stays open well into the evening. Mornings are busy and lively, but things simmer down a bit during the hottest part of the day, an ideal time to visit to beat the crowds. Evenings can be busy, but slightly cooler temperatures post-sunset make exploration more comfortable.

Zanzibar is often referred to as a ‘Spice Island’, owing to the large number of spice plantations located here. The island is a major producer of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, and turmeric, so try to visit a Zanzibari spice farm during your stay. Popular farms include Tangawizi and Kizimbani spice farm.
