POINT OF INTEREST

Glenbow Museum

130 9 Ave. SE., Calgary, Alberta

The largest cultural museum in Western Canada, Glenbow Museum showcases the history and culture of indigenous Canadians—particularly the Blackfoot Confederacy, whose traditional land Calgary occupies. The museum's impressive collection spans artifacts, artworks, archives, documents, and fun interactive exhibits.

Please note: The Glenbow Museum is currently closed for renovations, but you can see exhibits curated by the museum at its satellite gallery, Glenbow at The Edison, in downtown Calgary.

The extensive and eclectic collection at Glenbow is divided among several themed exhibit areas covering topics like Community History, Military & Mounted Police, Minerals, Native North America, and World Cultures. A highlight of the more than 20 galleries is the Mavericks Gallery, which tells the life stories of several dozen indigenous Albertans. Museum docents offer guided tours of particular galleries for a more in-depth look at the collection.

  • The Glenbow Museum is a must-visit for history buffs and art lovers.
  • While photography is permitted within the museum, the use of tripods and flash photography are prohibited.
  • Museum admission is free, thanks to the support of the Calgary Downtown Association; just note that entry is based on timed arrived slots, which must be prebooked.
  • The museum is accessible to wheelchairs and has two chairs available for use free of charge.

The Glenbow Museum is in Calgary’s cultural district on 9th Avenue, adjacent to the Calgary Tower. It’s a block away from the LRT CTrain line.

The Glenbow is open daily throughout the year, though exact hours vary by season. The museum is busier in the summer and on weekends; visit first thing in the morning to beat the crowds.

The Discovery Room at the Glenbow Museum gives visitors a chance to participate in hands-on activities inspired by the museum collection or temporary exhibits. Depending on the day, you might make paper flowers, embark on an art scavenger hunt, or learn more about how museum professionals handle rare artifacts.
