Latter-day Saints Family History Library

35 NW Temple St., Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City’s Latter-Day Saints Family History Library is the largest genealogical library in the world. Founded primarily to assist members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to fulfill one of their fundamental tenets—to baptize and otherwise save deceased ancestors—today many individuals use the library to simply research their ancestry.

Located in Salt Lake City’s historical Temple Square, the Family History Library, established in 1894, is open to the public. The library offers research assistance to help visitors trace their family history as well as classes on genealogical research topics, all free of charge. In the family-friendly Discovery Center, families can begin to track their ancestry through fun and interactive activities.

Most Salt Lake City sightseeing tours include a visit to Temple Square.

  • The Family History Library is ideal for anyone curious about their family lineage.

  • Enjoy free genealogical courses on-site and online as well.

  • The library is accessible to wheelchair users, offers special microfilm machines for those with visual impairment, and provides assistance for the hearing impaired.

The Family History Library is located in Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, and is easily reached by car, bike, bus, or TRAX (light rail). Public transportation is free in Salt Lake City’s Free Fare Zone, making it an easy and convenient way to get around. The blue and green TRAX lines stop at Temple Square. If driving, paid parking is available at Temple Square and across the street at City Creek Center.

The library is open 8am to 5pm Monday, 8am to 9pm Tuesday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm Saturday. Research specialists and trained volunteers are available to assist visitors during opening hours. The library hosts various classes on genealogical topics; check the online calendar for more information.

Temple Square is Salt Lake City’s top attraction, and you can easily spend a day touring the historic sites, gardens, monuments, museums, and more. Don’t miss the free daily organ recital in the Salt Lake City Tabernacle, and the temple and city views from the top floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Free guided tours of Temple Square are available daily, or you can pick up a self-guided visitor’s brochure at one of the two visitors centers located inside the square.
