POINT OF INTEREST

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (The Modern)

3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth, Texas

Home to one of the country’s biggest collections of modern and contemporary art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (The Modern) is equally celebrated for its striking steel-and-glass building, which suffuses the works with light. Collection highlights include works by Picasso, Warhol, Cindy Sherman, and other famed artists.

Home to a permanent collection of more than 3,000 works, and a showcase for temporary exhibitions, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is one of the Texan city’s foremost cultural attractions. Dedicated to abstract expressionist, pop art, and cubist pieces, as well as works from other modern art movements, the museum also hosts film screenings and theatrical performances. Though its founding in 1892 makes it Texas’ oldest museum, The Modern has, since 2002, been housed in a fittingly avant-garde building by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

Set in the heart of Fort Worth’s Cultural District, the museum is easy to reach, and tickets can be purchased online in advance.

  • Half-priced tickets are offered on Sundays, and free admission is offered on Fridays; visitors under 18 are also given free admission.

  • The on-site Café Modern serves an elevated New American menu, and hosts lunch, Sunday brunches, evening coffee and cocktail hours, and dinner on Fridays.

  • A free coat and parcel check is available on site, as well as self-service lockers.

  • All public areas of the museum are wheelchair-accessible.

The Modern is located at 3200 Darnell Street in Fort Worth’s Cultural District. If traveling from central Fort Worth, take Lancaster Ave W; free parking is available on-site. Other transportation options include Trinity Metro buses (Route 2W, 53, and The Dash), as well as bike, taxi, and rideshare services.

The Modern is open daily except Mondays, from morning until early evening. It is closed every year on New Year’s Day, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Because the museum offers an ever-changing cultural program, there’s something new to see every season.

Fort Worth is home to a wealth of museums and other cultural destinations, of which The Modern is just one highlight. Other popular stops include the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Industry, and the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame.
