Port of Santorini (Athinios Port)

Santorini

One of the most-visited Greek islands, crescent-shaped Santorini is served by multiple cruise lines. While the island has two ports, the Port of Santorini (Athinios Port)—located midway along the island on the caldera side—is the only one that serves passenger liners. Athinios connects Santorini to Athens and islands such as Mykonos, Milos, and Therasia.

Santorini is one of the most popular Greek islands, known for its bright-white, blue-roofed buildings hugging the cliffside. Most travelers docking at the Port of Santorini choose to stay on the island, opting for customizable private shore excursions, which often stop at Oia, Ilias Monastery, and more. Other Santorini tour options include sunset boat rides, photography experiences, and catamaran cruises, all of which are great options for overnight visitors.

  • Athinios Port can’t directly accommodate large cruise ships; passengers transfer to tenders (smaller vessels) before arriving at the island.

  • In the port area you’ll find basic amenities only, but regular buses and taxis can shuttle you around the island.

  • For a celebratory send-off, stop by one of the wineries located just minutes from the port.

  • Book your ferry tickets well in advance of your trip, and arrive an hour before your scheduled departure time.

Fira, Santorini's capital city, is situated roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Fira. The most comfortable way to get around the island is by taxi, though rental cars and local buses are also available. Shore excursions and private tours typically include round-trip transportation too.

The Port of Santorini is small and rather sparse, though you’ll find amenities such as travel agents, cafés, shops, a waiting room, and restrooms. Greek is the local language, but English is understood widely. The local currency is the euro.
