POINT OF INTEREST

The Capitol of Puerto Rico (El Capitolio)

1 Democracy Square, Old San Juan, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The hub of political life in Puerto Rico, the Capitol houses the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Legislative Assembly. The impressive building is reason enough for a visit, with its beautiful carved columns and dome, all designed by Puerto Rican architect Rafael Carmoega in the neoclassical revival style.

While the outside merits a visit, it's what's inside that counts. Step inside and you'll see elaborate murals and mosaics that recount the history of Puerto Rico, with contributions by some of the island territory's best-known artists, including Rafael Rios Rey and José Oliver. Walking tours of San Juan will take you up close to the building. You can also book a free tour through the Capitol directly or show up when the House or Senate is in session.

  • The Capitol building is a must-see for art and architecture lovers.

  • Tours can be arranged in advance through the Puerto Rican Office of Legislative Services, over the phone or by email.

  • Make sure to ask before taking photos inside, as there may be restrictions, especially during sessions.

The Capitol of Puerto Rico is situated in the heart of San Juan, about a 15-minute walk or 5-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal. If you join a guided city tour or sign up for a shore excursion that includes a stop at the Capitol, transportation will likely be provided.

The Capitol is open to the public from Monday through Friday. Guided tours are available on request and the schedule varies, so it’s best to plan in advance. If you want to witness the political process in person, simply ask when the House and Senate are in session.

If you're interested in learning more about Puerto Rico's cultural and political history, don't miss the Museum of the Americas (Museo de las Américas), about a 7-minute drive from the Capitol. This museum offers a mix of permanent and temporary exhibits focusing not only on post-colonial history on the island, but also on the people who lived and thrived here before European contact.
