Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

641 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, New York

Step back in time, to September 14, 1901, when Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated the 26th President of the United States following the assassination of President William McKinley. The Ansley-Wilcox house has been preserved as the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, and appears much as it did on that fateful day.

To visit the historic Victorian-era mansion you must join an on-site guided tour. Your walk through the restored rooms provides an immersive experience. Highlights include the site of the swearing in, as well as interactive exhibits, which cover McKinley’s assassination and death; Roosevelt’s emergency swearing-in; the Ansley Wilcox residence and family; Roosevelt’s life and presidency; and the Pan American Exposition of 1902. Audio and video exhibits help bring events to life.

Pre-book your tickets to avoid waiting in line, and reserve your tour to avoid disappointment. Docent-led tours occur hourly, on the half hour, and last for around one hour. Following the guided tour, you can explore the exhibits, house, and nearby sites, on your own.

  • The site is ideal for history buffs.

  • Children aged 5 and younger enter for free.

  • The tour is wheelchair accessible.

  • There is an on-site gift shop.

The site is located north of downtown Buffalo, with free off-street parking behind it. Enter the lot from Delaware Avenue or Franklin Street. Additional on-street meter parking is available on Delaware Avenue. By public transport, take Metro Bus No. 11 or No. 25.

The site is open seven days a week, year-round, with the exception of major public holidays. The site is open until 8pm on Tuesdays, and offers late tours and special programs. Allot around an hour for the tour—longer to explore the site and exhibits on your own after the tour.

History fans have plenty to explore in Buffalo and the surrounding areas in upstate New York, including the Millard Fillmore Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Darwin D. Martin House, Old Fort Niagara, Adams Power Plant Transformer House, Harriet Tubman Home, and Women’s Rights National Historical Park.
