Battle Road Historic Byway

Battle Road Historic Byway begins on a leafy residential street in Concord, northwest of downtown Boston, and ends among shopping plazas and apartment buildings in urban Arlington. Following in the steps of British soldiers and Colonial militiamen who fired the first shots of the American Revolution, the route is lined with numerous monuments and historic markers.

Leaving Concord, you’ll be treated to such classic New England sights as village greens, stately red-brick homes and pastures bordered by fieldstone walls. Not only is Battle Road the main route through Minute Man National Historical Park and its many historic sites, it also runs past the homes of 19th-century literary giants Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott.

In Lexington, Battle Road passes attractive shops and restaurants as well as restored 18th-century buildings and a statue honoring the minutemen who first took up arms against the British in 1775, heralding the start of the American Revolution.
