Gunflint Trail, or CR 12, began as a footpath. Nowadays it offers a scenic way to explore northern Minnesota highlights such as Superior National Forest and Lake Saganaga. Hiking, skiing and canoeing are popular seasonal activities. Common animals to see are deer in the woods, loons at the shoreline, and, in winter, moose using the winterized road as a salt-lick.


The 55-mile Gunflint Trail showcases the beautiful features of northern Minnesota, especially Superior National Forest and Lake Saganaga. Along the way, travelers can partake of recreational opportunities, such as water sports in summer and ski trails in winter. Wildlife also flourishes in the boreal forest, and bear, moose, deer and loons can sometimes be spotted.
