Kansas Scenic Turnpike

76.6 miles: 1 hours, 3 minutes

Drive the Kansas Turnpike at a leisurely pace, as the rural countryside and wide-open vistas are sure to give you a peaceful feeling. Mid-May through June and August through September are peak wildflower seasons, when vast pastures and prairies are abloom with color. This byway also is within Tornado Alley; the peak season is May to early June.

Expansive tallgrass prairies, green pastureland and rolling hills along the Kansas Turnpike invoke a rural tranquility in this region of eastern Kansas. The byway crosses the northern tip of 8,000-acre El Dorado Lake. Quaint farmhouses dot low hillsides, grain silos rise up from the ground and during growing season, amber waves of wheat sway in the wind.
