Casemates

The great cliffs of the Pétrusse and Alzette gorges are honeycombed with tunnels, stairways and chambers, called the Casemates, hollowed out of rock during the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally the network of Casemates measured over 14 miles and accom-modated thousands of soldiers. There was room for the stabling of their horses, and for all the garrison services from bakeries to workshops. Today about 10 miles of the Casemates survive. Two sections, the Casemates du Bock (Bock Casemates) and the Casemates de la Pétrusse (Pétrusse Casemates), are open to the public in summer.
