Parks and Gardens

Battersea Park
What could be more restful than a stroll in a park with a Peace Pagoda of its very own? There's also a children's zoo and a boating pond. Completely off the tourist path yet visible from Chelsea Embankment, the park (and pagoda) is just a few minutes' walk across Albert Bridge.
Chelsea Physic Garden
This charming small botanical garden was founded by the Society of Apothecaries; its name means 'of things natural'.
Greenwich Park
Lovely gardens, a boating lake and a wonderful view from the top of the hill.
Hampstead Heath/Richmond Park
You'll always be able to find space of your own on London's largest heath or in its largest and wildest park.
Wimbledon Common
over 400 hectares of open space in south London, with parkland, woodland and heath.
Hampton Court
The beautiful grounds and gardens start to fill up at weekends and holidays, but otherwise are delightfully tranquil.
Hyde Park
Too central and too well-known to offer real peace and quiet, but wander into the centre of the park on a weekday in school term time and you might just find a measure of tranquillity. You can hire rowing boats on the Serpentine.
Kew Gardens
The perfect place for those with green fingers - though it does get busy on Sundays.
The Regent's Canal
Take a traditional narrowboat to explore London's backwaters. The most popular excursion is from Little Venice to Camden Lock, with London Zoo en route. London Waterbus Company Phone: (020) 7482 2550 or Jason's Trip Phone: (020) 7286 3428.
