Italian is the native language but Romans speak a dialect with its own particular stresses, intonations and vocabulary, of which they are fiercely proud. Many Romans speak English but you will be better received if you at least attempt to communicate in Italian. Italian words are pronounced phonetically. Every vowel and consonant (except 'h') is sounded. The accent usually (but not always) falls on the penultimate syllable. Below is a list of a few words that may be helpful. More extensive coverage can be found in the AA's Essential Italian Phrase Book which lists over 2,000 phrases and 2,000 words.
