Dom

The ornate facade of the Dom (Cathedral), the first truly Italian-style church to be built north of the Alps, dominates the Domplatz, its four huge marble statues giving an indication of the interior splendors. There's been a cathedral here since the eighth century; today's structure is the third to occupy the site. It was built between 1614 and 1628, badly damaged during World War II, and completely restored by 1959. The huge interior, accommodating 10,000 people, is a riot of stucco, marble and gilding, the simple 14th-century font providing a serene contrast. You can visit the crypt to see the foundations of the medieval cathedral and the remains of the original Roman church, while the museum has superb treasures such as an eighth-century cross.
