  • The Siam Society (131 Soi Asoke, just off Thanon Sukhumvit, Bangkok) is a fascinating repository of books and objects relating to Thai culture. The society library is open to visitors during office hours.
  • A long-tail boat is a fast boat with a long propeller shaft projecting about 2m from the stern. The propeller shaft swings freely and is used for steering.
  • Women, even close relatives, should never touch an ordained Buddhist monk. When making offerings or even handing a book to a monk, women should lay the object in front of him and wait for him to pick it up.
  • Thais set considerable store by a value they call jai yen or 'cool heart'. Difficult or compromising situations are best resolved by keeping cool and never by shouting or displays of bad temper, which will only worsen matters
  • Kap Klaem or 'drinking food' is a name applied by Thais to snacks served as an accompaniment to alcoholic drinks. These snacks include peanuts, cashews, potato chips, pork rinds, shrimp cakes, sun-dried beef jerky and deep-fried grasshoppers and locusts.
  • Thai women are famous for their commercial abilities and constitute between 60 and 70 per cent of all business people in Thailand. The country has a higher ratio of female business ownership than anywhere else in the world.
