8 Similan Islands

The Similans are renowned for their rich coral reefs, clear waters and pristine beaches.

These islands are a naturalist's paradise. Marine animals include whale sharks, manta rays, bottlenose dolphins and large pelagic fish, along with interesting smaller life from garden eels to feather stars. More than 30 species of resident birds, such as the white-breasted waterhen and Brahminy kite, and migratory species, including the cattle egret, pintail snipe, grey wagtail and roseate tern, occupy the islands. Small mammals include the bush-tailed porcupine, common palm civet and flying lemur. Reptiles and amphibians include the banded krait, reticulated python, white-lipped pit viper, common pit viper, hawksbill turtle, leatherback turtle, Bengal monitor lizard and common water monitor lizard.

The name 'Similan' derives from the Malay word sembilan or nine and refers to the nine islands in the group. All are relatively small and uninhabited except for park officials and tour groups.

Divers generally prefer visiting the Similans on one of the many live-aboard boats that operate out of Phuket. Other visitors stay on Ko Miang, second in size to Ko Similan, where there is a visitors' centre, the park headquarters and the archipelago's only land accommodation. The beaches on this island are especially good for shallow-water snorkelling. Nearby Ko Similan is popular for walking and snorkelling. The largest granite outcrop in the archipelago is also found on Ko Similan and from the top there is a fine view of the surrounding sea.

Boats run to the Similans between November and May only, with the best diving months between December and May. For the remainder of the year the seas are too rough and water visibility is reduced.
