Finding Your Way

Between 1857 and 1865 Emperor Franz Josef Accessible: had the bastions surrounding Vienna's Old Town (Innere Stadt) demolished, and laid out a vast boulevard known as the Ring. Within the Old Town and the Ring are Vienna's most important sights, including St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) and the Imperial Palace (Hofburg).

It's possible to take in the main sights on foot, but the “Hop on, Hop off” buses are a flexible alternative, allowing you to hop on or off anywhere along their route. There are also trams and underground (U-Bahn) trains running through and around the area. A more expensive option is to hire a horse-drawn carriage (Fiaker) at Stephansplatz, Heldenplatz or Albertinaplatz. Be sure to agree on the price and length of trip before you begin your journey.

An outer ring road, the Gürtel (belt), links the city with major freeways. East of Vienna, the Danube river and the Danube canal cut through some 23 districts, and on the southern outskirts are the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald). Maps showing walking routes through the woods are available from the efficient information center at the corner of Albertinaplatz and Maysedergasse.
