Kittery is noted for its historic sites, rocky beaches and thriving outlet trade on US 1. Fort Foster, constructed soon after the Civil War, is situated on Gerrish Island in a park setting. The remains of the fort are open to the public Memorial Day to Labor Day, and visitors can enjoy views of Portsmouth Harbor, picnicking and nature trails.
