Downtown on Main Street, the Mineral and Lapidary Museum of Henderson County displays gems, minerals, geodes and fossils from around the world; phone (828) 698-1977. Just a short distance from downtown on US 64W is Oakdale Cemetery, now home to the Italian marble angel statue that figures prominently in Thomas Wolfe's first novel, “Look Homeward, Angel.” A historical marker explains its significance.
The Playhouse Downtown, 125 S. Main St., is a satellite venue of Flat Rock Playhouse Mainstage, the “State Theatre of North Carolina”.

Downtown's Historic Main Street is lined with antique and specialty shops. Browse the retro merchandise at the Mast General Store, 527 N. Main St. The Henderson County Curb Market, 221 N. Church St., offers a bounty of local items: fresh-picked fruits and vegetables; plants and cut flowers; baked goods (including a regional specialty, fried sweet potato pies); jellies, jams and canned pickles; and all sorts of handicrafts and gifts created by local artisans. The market is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 8-2.
