Across the river is Tower Hill State Park; phone (608) 588-2116. The restored Civil War shot tower is the last vestige of the town of Helena, a busy river port and railhead that once contended for the status of territorial capital.
In contrast to Wright's break with tradition, Spring Green's American Players Theatre bases its reputation on its adherence to the classics, with up to eight plays performed in rotating repertory. Staged in an amphitheater, the season generally is from the first Saturday in June through the first Saturday in November. The box office opens in late February; phone (608) 588-2361.
