Buffalo
After the area was opened to settlement, Buffalo was founded in 1879. Buffalo became known as the “Rustlers' Capital,” and by 1892 the tensions between the region's big cattlemen and farmers, or “nesters,” had erupted into the Johnson County War. It took the U.S. Army to restore order.
The growth of sheep ranching in the late 1890s brought Basque herders, who were drawn to Buffalo because of the Bighorn Mountains' resemblance to their homeland in the Pyrenees. Basque descendants continue to practice their time-honored traditions.
Guided saddle trips and jeep tours of nearby scenic and historical attractions can be arranged through local operators. Sightseeing is most rewarding along the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway portion of US 16 that runs between Buffalo and Ten Sleep.
Hunters can visit the Hunters Information Station in the chamber of commerce building.
