One afternoon while Saleem Khan was working inside Nelcon Service Center in North Haven, CT, one of his employees rushed in and said a serious crash had occurred right in front of the shop. Saleem and the employee ran outside to the scene where two of his mechanics, one who was an EMT, were trying to pull a car off one of the drivers who had been ejected and was now trapped between the car and a bus stop enclosure. They were able to free the man but he had a number of serious injuries, which Saleem and the others began tending to as quickly as possible. Shortly after, the paramedics arrived and took the man to the hospital.
About a month after the crash, a man wearing a baseball cap came into the service center and asked for Saleem. The man shook Saleem’s hand and said that the doctors at the emergency room told him that his efforts had not only saved the man’s arm but also his life. Now, every holiday season, the man stops by the shop and brings treats to the staff as a thank you.
Saleem and his staff were Real Heroes of the Road to this man who was able to make a full recovery because of their quick action. When you’re driving along the highway and you see Saleem, his staff or a service provider like them working, think of this story and what their heroism meant to this man. And when you do, please slow down and move over so they can do their job safely. We need service providers like Saleem and so do our members; but most of all, so do their families. Help us keep them safe.
