What is a Timing Belt?

The timing belt connects internal components to ensure they rotate at a synchronized rate. If a timing belt slips or breaks disrupting synchronous movement, pistons and valves will contact each other and cause major damage if you have an “interference” engine. On a “non interference” engine, however, a slipped or broken timing belt will only disable the vehicle. Either situation requires immediate service, however repair costs will be higher if major engine damage occurs. To avoid an unexpected breakdown or costly repairs, replace the timing belt per the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation noted in the owner's manual – typically between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. When replacing the timing belt, it is also common to replace the timing belt tensioner, idler pulleys and water pump.
