Native Americans from the Blackfoot, Crow and Shoshone tribes inhabited the area exclusively until explorer John Colter arrived in 1807. Following his arrival came a stream of explorers, trappers and miners. Powell, located about 75 miles from Yellowstone National Park's east entrance, was named after Mayor John Wesley Powell, an early-day explorer.
