About Cape CharlesThis planned community on the Eastern Shore was incorporated in 1886. With its deep harbor, Cape Charles served as a railroad terminus for ferries carrying freight and passengers from Little Creek. Development slowed after the last ferry terminal closed in 1950. One of the town founders, Alexander Cassatt, was the brother of impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.
Most of the original town has been preserved as a historic district, with houses reflecting Victorian, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and neoclassic styles. Contemporary residences dot the landscape at the 1,700-acre Bay Creek Resort and Club, 1 Marina Villages Cir., which features a marina as well as golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.
