Charlestown revived as settlers returned to the fertile Connecticut River Valley. During the Revolutionary War the town's wide main streets supposedly served as a training ground for the soldiers of Gen. John Stark, hero of the Battle of Bennington. Main Street has many buildings that date from the late 18th and early 19th century.
