North of Metaline Falls the Pend Oreille River flows through remote Z Canyon, so named for its zigzag shape. In places the canyon walls are upwards of 400 feet high but only two dozen feet apart. Sullivan Lake recreation area and the Salmo-Priest Wilderness are just east of town.
