First Bank of the United States

120 S. Third St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

After winning the Revolutionary War, America’s founding fathers established their original government in Philadelphia—among their goals was creating a single currency and founding a national bank to help build the nation. Today, the First Bank of the United States still stands on Independence Mall. Proposed by Alexander Hamilton, the bank was built in a Roman style to make the institution intentionally imposing.

Opened in 1791, the First Bank of the United States served as the nation’s first bank until 1811, laying the groundwork for the country’s financial system. Today, the building is a National Historic Landmark; however, you can only admire the bank from the outside, as it is not open to the public. Some guided sightseeing tours of Philadelphia, including Hamilton-themed tours, feature a stop at the bank, where you can learn about its history and haunted past.

  • The main entrance has a marble keystone with the head of Mercury, the Roman god of commerce.

  • The bank’s marble columns are a popular spot for wedding photos; though you’ll need a permit for such photography.

  • Download the National Park Service’s free app, which features information about the Independence National Historical Park, including the Liberty Bell, Christ Church Burial Ground, Carpenters’ Hall, and more. It also provides a map marking nearby food options and restrooms.

The First Bank of the United States sits on the eastern side of Independence Mall, next to Carpenters’ Hall and a few minutes’ walk from Independence Hall. The Independence National Historical Park Library sits just across the street. The park is easily accessible by public transportation, including SEPTA and PATCO mass transit routes. The closest SEPTA stop to the park is Jefferson Station at 11th and Market Streets. The PHLASH bus operates seasonally.

Spring and fall seasons are considered the best times to visit Philadelphia since this is when the weather is usually the most pleasant. The summer months (June, July, and August) are typically the most crowded with families traveling during school break. Since you aren’t able to tour the inside of the bank, you can stop by to view the exterior year-round.

Thanks to the popularity of the musical, Hamilton, guided tours have popped up exploring significant sites, such as the First Bank of the United States, that relate to the country’s first treasury secretary. History buffs and musical theater fans will enjoy this unique perspective of Philadelphia and will be able to revisit key moments in Hamilton's life.
