Florida Black Bear Scenic Route 19

57.9 miles: 1 hours, 25 minutes

The Ocala National Forest, said to have the world’s largest sand pine stand, dominates your journey on Florida Black Bear Scenic Route 19 (SR 19/FR 43). After crossing a swampy network of creeks, the forest gives way to pine flatwoods with a dense understory and an open canopy forest. A short, unpaved detour leads to Fort Gates Ferry and picturesque St. Johns River.

White-sand, side roads and rural ranches seldom interrupt your Florida Black Bear Scenic Route 19 excursion past continuous and open canopies of palmettos, longleaf and sand pine, and oaks draped with moss and vines. Aquatic plants hug cypress trees and branches overhang murky water in the swampy area near Ocklawaha River and surrounding creeks.
