Bohemia and Moravia

Most visitors to the Czech Republic head straight for Prague, but there is plenty to enjoy in the country's diverse landscapes. Locked between Poland, Germany, Slovakia and Austria, the republic takes in two regions: Bohemia, itself surrounded by a ring of mountains, and the lowlands of Moravia. Both have suffered adversely from the effects of heavy industrialization - acid rain and deforestation among them - but both also have areas of real beauty.

In southern Bohemia, such medieval towns as České Budějovice (home of Budweiser beer) and Český Krumlov, with its great 13th-century castle, recall a time when kings and lords were eager to build in one of Europe's richest regions. To the west are famous spa towns best known by their German names: Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) and Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně).
In Moravia, wedged between the western uplands and the eastern White Carpathian mountains, the city of Brno gives access to the Punkevní jeskyně (Punkva Caves).
