Czech Culture

Despite the hijacking of the term “bohemian” by the West to mean “unconventional,” the Czechs are generally rather reserved. Beyond this, though, is a friendliness and genuine interest in other cultures. Young Czechs often speak English, and are tuned in to Anglo-American pop culture.

Love of arts and literature is not confined to Prague. Václav Havel, the first post-Communist president, was better known among Czechs as a poet and playwright. Music has a special place in Czech life, too - from oompah-style brass bands to the classical tradition that produced such composers as Antonín Dvořák.
Overall, most people who travel around the Czech Republic will be struck by the diversity of this small nation. As the republic embraces capitalism, there is a certain amount of anxiety as well as hope. A visit to this society in transition between two worlds is sure to be rewarding.
