Cafés and Taverns

There are 24 breweries here, more than in any other German city. All produce the local beer, Kölsch, which is light and clear and served in tall, slim glasses. Beer halls, known in the local dialect as Weetschaften, also serve food at very reasonable prices. Specialties at these establishments include rolls with cheese (Halve Hahn) or rye bread with black sausage (Kölsche Kaviar).

You will find plenty of restaurants in the historic center, ranging from the traditional Gasthaus (tavern) to trendy bistros, and the range of cuisines includes Japanese, French, Burmese, Chinese, Turkish and East European. Wine bars and cellars are another source of refreshment, serving some of the excellent wines from the Rhine valley. There are many cafés in which to stop for the ubiquitious Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cakes).
